The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, located in Amherst, MA, is the first sizable institution dedicated to picture books and picture book illustrations from around the world. Its collection encompasses more than 11,000 objects—7,300 of which are illustrations—including art by Eric Carle, Maurice Sendak, and Leo Lionni. On the 40,000 sq. ft. premises are three art galleries, an art studio, a theater, picture book and scholarly libraries, and a gift shop.

Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum

The Gardner Museum houses the collection of Isabella Stewart Gardner, a local patron of the arts who died in 1924, in a building she commissioned to look like a 15th century Venetian palazzo. The center of the original building showcases courtyard plantings that reflect the seasons as they evolve throughout the year. In addition to her collection, which remains displayed exactly she arranged it per her will, there are changing exhibitions, concerts, lectures, family events, and an artist-in-residence program. In 2012, the museum opened an addition designed by Renzo Piano that houses a space for their concert series.

MASS MoCA occupies a complex of 19th-century mill buildings on a 16-acre site in downtown North Adams, MA. Opened to the public in 1999, the museum exhibits art by both well-known and emerging artists, focusing on large-scale, immersive installations that would be impossible to realize in conventional museums. Exhibitions take place in both inside galleries and on the grounds. Among others, permanent exhibits include important works by Sol LeWitt, Joseph Beuys, and Anselm Kiefer. A museum shop and a number of eating and drinking opportunities are on the premises.

Located in Boylston, MA, and open year-round, the New England Botanic Garden at Tower Hill features carefully planned gardens and collections of ornamental, edible and native plants, with a number of trails that traverse the 132-acre property. The Garden is run by the Worcester County Horticultural Society, the third oldest active horticultural society in the United States.

The Norman Rockwell Museum, founded in 1969, is located on a scenic 36-acre campus. It is home to the world's largest collection of works by the artist, as well as an impressive archive of items related to his life. Ten galleries feature a range of exhibitions, including every one of the Saturday Evening Post covers he created, and changing special exhibitions. His studio was moved to the grounds from its original Stockbridge location in 1986. There is a gift shop and café on the premises.

The Peabody Essex Museum grew out of the collection of East India Marine Society, an organization of Salem captains whose charter called for acquisition of “natural and artificial curiosities.” Its permanent collection contains art and artifacts of Africa, Asia, India, China (with a Qing Dynasty house brought from the Huizhou region), Japan, Korea, Pacific Islands, and features objects of maritime art and history that include paintings, drawings, ship models, marine decorative arts, tools, weapons, navigational instruments, and ship and yacht plans. It also has a thriving changing exhibition schedule that sometimes includes important traveling shows.
